Restarting your computer and router is the first step to take if you encounter the error message “Windows couldn’t determine this network’s proxy setting”. This will close all active applications and reset the proxy settings to default. For the majority of users, this should solve the issue.

If that doesn’t work you can try disabling any antivirus software or firewall VPN software that may be interfering with your Internet connection. You can disable each application by navigating to the settings and removing it one at atime. After you have disabled all of these apps, try reconnecting to your Internet and see if the issue is still happening.

If none of these options resolves the problem it is possible to do a system restore. This will restore the default network settings and will also eliminate any other changes that might be making the issue. This can be done by going to the Control Panel and then clicking on “Internet Options.” Once you’re in the window and you’re there, uncheck the boxes labelled Automatically detect settings and use a proxy server to connect to your LAN. This will only affect the current user account. If you’re using a shared computer, you might need to repeat the process for other users. You can turn off proxy settings with the Registry Editor. However, this method is more difficult and could lead to issues in the future.
